The bandages dehumanize her and almost make her serve as the typical “scary monster” of this “horror” film. This woman’s face is completely wrapped in bandages only her eyes and lips are visible, which is just a beautiful sight, as you can imagine. But, the ambiguity of many aspects of the film adds to the building suspense and mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. They don’t give A SINGLE DETAIL about that damned accident throughout the entirety of the film.
Goodnight Mommy is an Austrian psychological thriller that tells the tale of two twin boys, Elias and Lukas, who begin to speculate that their mother has been replaced by an imposter after she undergoes very extensive facial reconstructive surgery brought about by an unidentified and far too ambiguous “accident.” Yeah, that’s right. If you have no interest in watching it, then carry on. I hope my short description entices you to watch the film, so that way you can come back and read my analysis and we can chat! BUT GO WATCH IT NOW. Jump scares and monsters straight out of a child’s nightmares were not present, which was refreshing and interesting to see, because it adds to the unique nature of the film.

The Austrian psychological thriller does not fit the criteria of a typical horror movie AT ALL it is a slow burn that fills you with discomfort and distresses you at times. It bothered me that I genuinely enjoyed some parts of the movie and had no desire to turn off my computer, leave my room, and cleanse both my house and my soul with sage. It is unsettling, unnerving, but oddly fascinating.
Goodnight Mommy is the paragon of bizarre film. This movie both cleansed my brain of any possible words to describe it with AND simultaneously filled it with far too many.
